In an interview with Forbes, AT&T CTO John Donovan has detailed AT&T’s plans to deploy VoLTE on its forthcoming LTE network by 2013 as it waits for the standard to mature and is included in its seven year timeline to move voice services from time division access based protocols to VoLTE.
A variety of of VoIP based solutions have also been suggested inbetween the VoLTE rollout as well as allowing third-party VoLTE solutions.
Donovan also detailed steps that AT&T currently takes to manage bandwidth by alerting application developers when a specific application uses more bandwidth than needed and suggests ways to decrease usage while maintaining quality and functionality.
Related to that point, he also compared the wireless data network to a shared and limited resource that must be conserved, much like land or water “A wireless network is a shared resource just like water and land, It’s in everyone’s best interest to manage supply and demand.”
