Sprint to Apply Premium Data Surcharge to New Smartphone Activations On January 30th

Sprint has announced in a press release this morning that it will apply its $10 Premium Data surcharge to all new smartphone activations on Everything Data plans beginning on January 30th, qualifying the increase by citing network and maintenance costs as well as the increased amount of data that smartphone owners use. The carrier previously limited the surcharge to smartphones with 4G WiMax radios and will now apply the surcharge to all smartphones including Blackberry, Android, Windows Mobile, Palm and the Instinct series regardless of 4G access, stating that it was “never simply a 4G fee”.
