Today’s Mobile News in Brief (March 1, 2011)

As reported here on Cell Phones Etc. and across the Web, here’s your daily brief on what happened in the world of mobile phones this Tuesday, March 1st, 2011.

Official OS 6.0.0.461 for the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and Curve 9300 from Telus
After previously being released by Virgin Mobile and Wind, it’s Telus’ turn, this time around, to come out with the BlackBerry 6 upgrade. Telus subscribers can now update their BlackBerry Bold 9700 and Curve 3G smartphones to the latest BlackBerry OS version. Happy updating, guys, and don’t forget to back up first before anything else.

Windows Phone Marketplace hits 9,000–right on schedule
Microsoft’s Marketplace is continuously growing, and after just two weeks of hitting the 7,000 app mark, they’ve now added 1,000 more apps to their collection putting them at pace to reach the 10,000 mark by mid-March. Of course, putting things into perspective, this is still a far cry from what’s readily available at the App Store and Android Marketplace, but with Microsoft’s recent decision to up the free app limit, we wouldn’t be surprised if things suddenly kicked into high gear for WP7’s Marketplace sometime soon.

Motorola CEO: Webtop Docks Not Exclusive to Atrix, Coming to More Devices 2H 2011
Well, I guess the title already says it all. The webtop apps and LapDock that sets the Atrix apart from the rest of the pack won’t just be limited to the particular model. This will be standard in all future high-end Moto handsets, the earliest of which is scheduled to arrive in the 2H of 2011. What these are, we still don’t know, but the Droid Bionic is definitely one of them.

Photo of iPhone 5 screen shows larger diagonal, super thin bezel
Will the iPhone 5 sport a 4-inch display? A snapshot of a purported iPhone 5 front panel seems to suggest so. This serves as the first solid evidence to support on-going rumors that the newest iPhone will come with a much larger touchscreen. Of course, this could just be a component for a KIRF device, but something in our gut is telling us it’s not. Anyway, we’ll know by June, when Apple’s expected to launch the 2011 iPhone, whether this is legit or not.
