Update for Motorola Milestone Android 2.2 Froyo now available

Well quiet astonishingly Motorola decided to update the Milestone, the European version of the original Droid, to Android 2.2 Froyo. Last year, we heard that Moto first wasn’t sure whether to upgrade the Milestone or not, then that the update will be made available in September (in Germany at least), and finally that it will happen sometime during the last quarter of 2010.

Obviously, none of those things happened, and almost an entire quarter later, it’s finally here. Of course, by now Motorola could have updated the Milestone to Gingerbread, but that clearly would’ve made some people steer clear of the Milestone 2 and go for the much cheaper original, so it was a no go. Anyway, Milestone owners should be happy (if there are any left). Their phone is finally stepping into 2010.

Too bad it’s 2011 already. The update is not over-the-air, meaning that performing it will involve a computer and a data cable. Also, Motorola says that after the update your phone may operate slower than before, and suggests limiting the number of open applications as a fix. Both those things sound a bit off, since Froyo is faster than Android 2.1, and since Android can manage open applications by itself pretty well.

Or maybe this update was a rush job. After all, it’s only been about 9 months since Froyo was released, and perhaps Motorola needed more time to test it. Who knows? Also note that you’ll lose all your apps and settings. Well a small price to pay perhaps for the honour of receiving such an update.
