On NFC Payments Google Working With Mastercard And Citigroup

We already know that Google has been working on a Near Field Communications (NFC) payment system, we recently saw the launch of Google’s new Smartphone which features NFC built in the Google Nexus S.
Now the WSJ are reporting that Google is working with MasterCard and also Citigroup on NFC payments, and according to the report the payment system would let customers who use Citigroup debit cards to pay for things via NFC with an NFC enabled mobile application on their smartphone.

The report also states that the deal includes VeriFone Systems Inc, who make credit card readers, and they are apparently working on a device which would be able to communicate with a users NFC enabled smartphone at point of sale.
We have also heard previously that Apple may be working on a new NFC payment system, something which we were expecting to see in this years iPhone 5, although recent reports have indicated that we may have to wait to 2012 to see the first NFC enabled iPhone.
